June 10, 2004: Bonnaroo! After meeting riot cops face to face in Brunswick
during the Environmental Justice March we headed off to a friendlier scene\Manchester,
Tennessee.?One farm and 90,000 eager music fans equal serious traffic.?Two
hours and ten sun salutations (roadside yoga during standstill traffic is the
way to go) we decided to postcard unsuspecting Bonnaroo attendees trapped in
their gas guzzling non-hybrids.?Finally, we arrived at our campsite to find
a troupe of enthusiastic non-profiteers.?Joined by Southern Alliance for Clean
Energy, the Florida Progressive Alliance, Student Energy Coalition, Dogwood
Alliance, Clean Vibes, Sequatchie Valley Institute (also known as Moonshadow),
and the National Resource Defense Council we formed a fearless army of environmental
avengers.?After sharing anecdotes, concerts and burritos we were fast friends.
Eighty music shows and three rainstorms later, the Hybrid Evolution Duo and
our courageous volunteers found ourselves in a pile of 652 signed postcards
ready to be shipped to the Bush Administration. We were joined by rockstar
volunteers Kali Kirkendall, Ohio State University student activist, Tommy Bensko
and Becca Hines from University of Tennessee activists for the weekend. Thank
y’all for making it possible. One highlight was Ani diFranco leading with her
Evolution song…she was singing straight to us.
We would be mistaken not to thank the crazy, yet amazing Nick Algee from SACE
for coordinating all of the non-profits and social change efforts at Bonnaroo.
